Holman Hunt's 'The Light Of The World'

Parish Visit To Oxford

Last month a group from the parish visited Oxford to see some of the colleges and their chapels. In the morning we visited Keeble College where after coffee in one of the common rooms, Revd Alan Shin took us to the College Chapel. He gave a talk on the building of the chapel and after a Eucharist we later went into the small side chapel to see 'The Light of the World' (see right), the famous painting by Holman Hunt, which was donated to the college in 1872 by the widow of Thomas Crombe. After lunch we visited New College chapel and then Merton College chapel where yet another of Jeremy’s friends was the chaplain. Another interesting background talk made the building come alive. We ended the day with a light tea in the Great Hall.

Many thanks to Jeremy Dussek and Anne Charles for arranging the visit.
